FAQ: Housing Transfers to the New LotRO Servers

Everything you need to know to prepare for transferring your houses to the New 64 bits Servers in 2025.

Hello everyone,

SSG has not yet announced the exact date, but as you may know, new 64-bit servers are expected to launch in February (if everything goes as planned), and you will be offered a free transfer to them.

Since the announcement, many legitimate questions have been raised about the transfer procedure. As I’ve seen a lot of misinformation on forums and elsewhere, I’ve decided to create a dedicated FAQ containing the key information you’ll need to transfer your houses to your chosen new server.

This FAQ is not exhaustive, so if you still have questions, feel free to let me know, and I’ll do my best to answer them.

To compile this FAQ, I relied on the current knowledge about how transfers work, as well as insights from the latest Cordovan streams. I also reached out to SSG for clarification on some technical details.

I’ll let you dive into the guide now!

Note: This guide focuses on the procedures for housing owners in LotRO. For other transfer related details, please refer to the official FAQ on the game’s website when it will be made available.

  • Is transferring mandatory?
No, the current servers will continue to be maintained and receive updates. Their status will be reassessed at the end of the year if their population is too low.
  • Reward Track:
Your progression is tied to each server and will not be transferred. Be sure to claim your items before transferring. You will start the current season over on the new server.
  • Items to keep in mind:
    • Items in the Auction House will be lost. Check to make sure nothing is left before transferring.
    • Any unclaimed mail will be lost. Ensure you check all your characters before leaving your server.
  • Housing refunds:
If the procedure is followed, all your houses will be refunded at 100% (Classic kinship houses will not be refunded, so here, you’ll just lose some gold).

  • Do not sell your houses before transferring!
This includes both classic and premium houses. Your houses must be active to receive a full refund.
  • Pay attention to decorations:
Decorations linked to other characters or accounts will not transfer with your character. If the process works correctly, they will be sent back to their respective owners, but you can do this manually by clicking the “Return to Owner” button for the relevant decorations.

  1. Kinship Leader
  2. House Owner
  3. Shared Storage
  4. Other Characters

On the old server:

  • Do not disband your kinship.
  • Abandon the kinship house.
  • Optionally, manually return decorations bound to other members/accounts. All unbound decorations will be placed in the kinship leader’s housing chest or Escrow.

On the new server:

  • Once the transfer is complete, log in with the kinship leader.
  • Your kinship will retain its full history upon login.
  • Buy a new kinship house with the refunded funds. Once purchased, the housing chest will have the same number of slots as before.
  • Decorations linked to your account or unlinked will be available from the Escrow Broker.

On the old server:

  • Do not sell your house.
  • Empty the non-shared chests of premium houses (the 25-slot chests).
  • Clear your housing chest and decoration slots of items bound to other characters/accounts if you do not plan to transfer them.

On the new server:

  • Log in to receive the refund for your houses.
  • All bound and unbound decorations will be available from the Escrow Broker, but you don’t need to handle them immediately.
  • Buy a new house.
  • All decorations will now be in overflow within the house chest.
  • Additional slots unlocked for the house chest will either transfer automatically or be refunded so you can repurchase them.

  • Are houses refunded at 100%?
Yes, all personal houses (classic or premium) and premium kinship houses, will be fully refunded if you follow the procedure.
Note: Classic kinship houses will not be refunded, so here, you’ll just lose some gold.
  • What happens to unlocked chest slots?
They will either transfer automatically or be refunded.
  • Is the overflow unlimited?
Overflow allows house chests and the Escrow Broker to hold an unlimited number of decorations. However, the game can only display 10,000 items in a single container at a time, so you will need to remove some items to see the rest.
  • Is there a time limit to retrieve my decorations from escrow?
No, there is no time limit to retrieve your items.
  1. Claim all your mail and reward track items.
  2. Empty the Auction House.
  3. (Optional) Check each house and return items that do not belong to you.
  4. Clear the unique chests from premium houses.
  • Bound to other account/people items:
Decorations bound to other characters/account will transfer automatically if possible. However, if you do not plan to transfer the linked character or if the decoration does not belong to you, it is advised to return them manually.
  • Should I empty my house manually before transferring?
No. However, if you are worried about losing decorations for any reason, you can do so for peace of mind.
  • Will carry-alls retain their contents?
    Yes!
  • Managing currencies:
Be mindful of Figments of Splendour, Motes, and Embers, which have strict caps and cannot exceed 10,000 on the new servers.
  • I have deco items into other people houses, what will happen?
Feel free to ask for them before transferring, or leave a useless character on the old server that you can then bring back in a few months.

SSG will have its own FAQ in the next few weeks, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask !

  1. Great information, thank you! I do have a question about bound items at a Kin House. Our original Kin Leader very sadly, passed away a couple years ago. There are a number of items bound to him that sounds like we will lose after the transfer. Can we ask SSG if there is any way around a situation like this?
