A few word from the homeowner:

Before taking possession of the Tower of Orthanc—also known as Isengard or Angrenost—the wizard Saruman wandered for a time, adopting several temporary residences that he eventually abandoned, until at last he settled permanently in Orthanc.

One of these dwellings was located near Bree, in the hamlet of Southolt, a place safeguarded by the Rangers of the North and much favored by Saruman during the period when he remained loyal to the Free Peoples.

Years later, he abandoned that house, which had served as a study and repository of his research. There he left behind a considerable collection of books and artifacts, entrusted to the care of the Order of the Secret Fire—a discreet brotherhood of sages which stil loyal to the White Council after the betrayal of Saruman, and whose mission was to assist the Heren Istario (the Order of the Istari) in minor and logistical matters.

In time, the house became one of the Order’s many refuges. It is now occupied by Aen, head of The Secret Fire brotherhood, who uses it as a base of operations to support the city’s reconstruction, undertaken by the Dúnedain of the Northern Watch.
